The Balkan River Summit 2024<\/strong> , held in Podgorica, brought together defenders of rivers from the entire region, providing an opportunity to exchange experiences, celebrate victories and map new steps in the protection of free and wild rivers – an invaluable natural treasure of the Balkans.<\/h2>\n\n

At this year’s summit, the key theme was strengthening regional solidarity and knowledge sharing among activist groups, which was highlighted through panels and workshops dedicated to river protection and the challenges faced by environmental activists.<\/p>\n\n

Panels on river protection and the European Green Deal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

At the panel on the European Green Deal<\/strong> and river protection in the Western Balkan countries, \u017daklina \u017divkovi\u0107<\/strong> from Polekol and the Right to Water initiative emphasized the importance of returning decision-making power to the people, far from the interests of big capital. She particularly emphasized the need for quick and efficient implementation of the law in order to ensure the protection of river ecosystems. <\/p>\n\n

At a panel on regional efforts to protect rivers<\/strong> , Lejla Kusturica<\/strong> shared best practices in the fight against projects like small hydroelectric plants, emphasizing the importance of building solidarity among local groups. “Community and the exchange of resources are key to strengthening our movements,” said Kusturica. <\/p>\n\n

Workshop on activism and human rights<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

At a workshop dedicated to activism, human rights and access to justice<\/strong> , Azra Berbi\u0107<\/strong> and \u017daklina \u017divkovi\u0107<\/strong> analyzed the challenges facing environmental activists, including SLAPP lawsuits, security threats and burnout risks. The workshop provided a space for sharing experiences and strengthening the resilience of activists in the face of these increasing pressures. <\/p>\n\n
