Danube connects us!

The Tvrđava Movement and the Right to Water initiative toured the Danube and Ježava rivers in Smederevo together. We witnessed firsthand what rivers mean to urban environments—and how they are threatened by industrial pollution and untreated municipal wastewater.

Since 2018, the Tvrđava Movement has been tirelessly working to protect the environment—from fighting air and soil pollution to advocating for the enforcement of existing regulations. They were instrumental in prompting inspections to respond to numerous pollution cases and ensuring that the steel mill was finally penalized for air pollution in the city.

We discussed not only the problems but also the immense potential of the Danube and its ecosystem as a space for nature protection and sustainable tourism—where water is not just a resource to be used, but a good that deserves respect and preservation. United around our rivers, we are building a network of resistance and hope—a growing environmental movement in Serbia.
