Save the flame and put out the fire

Closed Green Horizons Academy

Green European Foundation in cooperation with Organisation for Political Ecology PolEkol, from November 18 to 20, 2022, hosted numerous activists from Serbia and the region at the second Green Horizons Academy in Belgrade.

“A good collective” was the theme of the Academy, which was approached through reflection on organizational structures and the environment in which we operate, mental health and the prevention of burnout syndrome in the green movement and wider civil society.

The Academy was opened by Branko Ančić, from the Institute for Social Research/ Institute for Political Ecology IPE (Zagreb), with an introductory lecture on the topic “Since collapse is coming, are we going to be happy?”. One of the most important questions raised during the lecture is the issue of climate anxiety, but also what we can do to save the planet and each other. The conclusion of the lecture was that by sharing we can achieve common well-being and happiness.

After the introductory lecture, the panel “Are we good” followed, moderated by Iva Marković (PolEkol), Brajan Brković, citizen activist, Isidora Petrović, coordinator of membership development and internal communication in Ne davimo Belgrade, Maja Stojanović, executive director of Civic Initiatives, spoke and Dragan Srećković, organisational development consultant. The messages that echoed from the panel were that we should gather around the activist fire in solidarity and listen to each other, as well as that in collectives we should share support and not fuel anxiety.

The next two days of the Academy’s closed program were dedicated to workshops and discussions that answered the questions, what are good activist collectives? What do sustainable structures look like? How to care for the mental health of activists and prevent burnout?

Participants was guided through these topics by Sonja Stojanović Gajić, activist and consultant for organizational development, who held a lecture and workshop on the topic of sustainable structures “Sustainable or sustainable collective”; Psychologist Doris Rafajlovski led the participants through the workshop “Put out the fire and save the flame”, which dealt with the prevention of burning; “Personally, collegially, politically – feminization of the organizations”, was the topic of the fishbowl discussion in which with paticipants spoke Lidija Vasiljević, psychologist, psychotherapist and psychodrama trainer, Bojana Bijelović Bosanac, trade union organizer and Jelena Memet, feminist, peace activist and co-founder, Alternative center for girls; The academy closed with the workshop “Sustainable collective: communication, conflicts and support”, held by Aleksandra Živković, professional coach and environmental activist.

After three days of exchanging knowledge, experiences and strong feelings, we came to the conclusion that good activist collectives foster a culture of togetherness, understanding, support and gratitude. Such a solidarity approach will help them preserve the flame to put out the fires.
